Solving the quadratic equation x² - x - 1 = 0 using the standard quadratic formula yields the roots x = (1 ± √5)/2. This single equation produces two polar opposites: an expanding force (φ) and a contracting force (ψ). While algebraically equal, they act as geometric inverses in physical space.
The positive root φ = (1 + √5)/2 ≈ 1.618034 is an expanding force. It governs the outward growth of spirals in shells and galaxies, acting as a multiplier of space and shape. The negative conjugate root ψ = (1 - √5)/2 ≈ -0.618034 is a contracting force. It pulls inward, drawing paths back toward a silent, collapsed center.
